Home security camera

A home security camera is one of your first and last lines of defence

Home security cameras. The thought is not entirely appealing to many people. Yes, the advantages are there, but has it really come to this? Is our world in such a state that we need to outfit our houses with military style defences? Can our kids not play outside in the backyard in safety without the ever watchful eye of a security camera on them?

These are questions with no definitive answer. Yes, the world has dangers. Is it so prevalent that security cameras are a must? Probably not, though some would try to convince you otherwise. The truth is that for all the dangers in the world, we are for the most part a peaceful race, living in a civilized society and in harmony with one another. Still, the risks are there, and property crime rates continue to stay high.

You can live without one, there's no denying this. Security cameras do have undeniable benefits in the form of severely decreased crime rates in their presence though. So the question becomes, do the benefits outweigh the unease and disgust you may feel at having one. This is up to you to decide.

The different types of security cameras available

Assuming you have decided to get a home security camera, or are seriously considering it, let's look into the options available to you.

The most common form of home security camera is the outdoor camera. These are typically placed above doors, or at the gated entrances of large estates. Make sure when searching for an outdoor camera that it is built for that scenario. Don't just buy any camera and throw it outside, or you may find your camera degrading rapidly from weather and the elements. Outdoor specific cameras will have extra protective casings to prevent this from happening.

Dome style cameras have the positive of being fairly unobtrusive and less unsightly than normal security cameras, and can be used both indoors or out. They also have the added benefit of being undetectable as to their orientation, so they can't skilfully be avoided.

The last form is wireless/hidden cameras. These are the least used for home security reasons, as they fail in acting as deterrents to crime, and only pick up possible crime in progress. These are more likely to be used for other forms of security measures, such as monitoring a baby-sitter's treatment of your children.

A final alternative is a fake camera. These look like the real thing, and have the same qualities as a deterrent factor to crime, but without the cost and also without any possible abhorrent feelings towards it as described above, since it is nothing more than decoration, and not an actual security camera invading your privacy in a sense.

Whichever option you go with, know that your risk of property crime has dropped tremendously. If you can stand looking at it on a daily basis, it will serve you well.
