Wireless home security system

Wireless home security is more reliable and affordable than ever

Once committed to buying a home security system, you'll be faced with your first major decision. Wired or wireless. Each has advantages and disadvantages, and the one that is more appealing to you will depend on your situation, and perhaps also your future plans. Let's look further into wireless home security systems and see if they're the right choice for you.

Years ago, if you were in the market for a home security system, you only had one choice, wired. Wired systems were costly, requiring major facelifts to existing homes to make them functional. This of course limited the appeal of home security to existing home owners. Another issue was the irrevocability of it. Once it was installed, there was no going back, and there was also no way to bring it with you if you moved.

Thankfully technology doesn't stand still, but jumps ahead in leaps and bounds, and soon an alternative to wired home security was available. Certainly not without its early flaws, but a compelling alternative to wired none the less.

Wireless home security offers great portability and ease of reconfiguration

Obviously enough, the first benefit of wireless home security systems is…no wires. This allows the systems to be set up without any costly home remodelling required. This also makes the system easily portable. If you move from your current residence, just pack up your system with the rest of your belongings and bring it with you.

Wireless systems are similar to wired systems in most other respects. The unit runs on batteries, which will require careful monitoring, but the system will alert you when battery power is running low for any wireless component. Most systems have a further reserve of back-up energy that will kick in if a battery has been completely depleted, so that your system continues to work for as long as possible until your batteries can be replaced. This is important for long vacations, when you wont have the ability to change the batteries, though it would be wise to have a friend or family member come over to your house every couple of days to change them.

When you first activate your wireless home security system, it will send out and pick up signals from all wireless sensors placed around your home. These sensors will alert the control panel when anything happens that is meant to trigger it, and the panel will then take the appropriate action, whether that be sounding the internal siren, or alerting the monitoring center of your home security company if you have one, or both.

Wireless systems had issues of reliability in the past, caused by interference from outside signals either causing false alarms, not triggering legitimate alarms, but these problems have been largely eliminated.

Wireless home security systems are now on the same level as wired systems, and with added benefits as well. If changing some batteries once in a while is not an issue for you, then a wireless home security system is the perfect fit for your household.
